Addiction medicine recognized as new sub-specialty

Scott Teitelbaum, M.D.“Addiction is not a pretty illness,” said addiction medicine doctor, Dr. Scott Teitelbaum. “And it’s been a great debate in our society, is it a medical illness, is it a crime, or is it a sin.”

Dr. Teitelbaum with the UF Health Florida Recovery Center hopes that a new recognition will start to change addiction’s bad name.

On March 14, the American Board of Medical Specialties recognized addiction medicine as a new multispeciality subspecialty. Meaning doctors certified by the ABMS can now become certified in addiction medicine.

“The specialty has grown to the point that we realize it really is a true subspecialty. What we do in addiction medicine is different,” said Dr. Anthony Russell, a fellow at the Florida Recovery Center.
