Medical pros hope addiction treatment just got a needed boost

President ObamaIn late March, President Barack Obama appeared at a national summit on heroin and prescription drug addiction and pushed for better treatment options and access to health care to address an opioid epidemic that contributed to more than 28,000 deaths in 2014.

While Obama’s comments highlighted an ongoing drug problem nationwide, health professionals focused on substance abuse treatment hope an announcement earlier last month will provide a needed boost to addiction medicine.

In mid-March, the American Board of Medical Specialties officially recognized addiction medicine as a medical subspecialty, a decision that will mean increased training and board certification for doctors and hopefully boost the quality of and access to care nationwide.
