September is designated as Recovery Month. It was originally created by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. Each September, FRC hosts a reunion banquet to recognize and honor our alumni and allow everyone an opportunity to stay connected after treatment in conjunction with Recovery Month. Our alumni come from all over the country in the spirit of celebrating recovery.
Time is spent connecting to others they haven’t seen or getting introduced to new friends. We host a dinner and have guest speakers to share their stories of hope and then conclude the night with fun skits, staff awards, a sobriety countdown, and a slideshow highlighting our alum. Our alumni committee plays an integral role in planning and hosting the event. Any alumni interested in attending our reunion and/or joining the committee can contact our coordinator Olivia Kabat for more information at Okab0001@shands.ufl.edu.
